Five Musical Artists Who Should Just Go Vegas, Baby!

July 20th, 2010

There comes a point in the career of any musical act where the only reasonable thing to do is to follow the trailblazing example of the King. By this we mean: Buy a lot of jumpsuits, move your bloated, fat ass to Las Vegas and basically become an ersatz version of your former glory in the city that exists to give a home to ersatz culture of every type. Hey, it worked for the King, it can work for these five artists, too.

5) PrinceHas anyone noticed that Prince is already ninety-percent of the way there? He’s got the ridiculous jumpsuits, he’s already been reduced to playing medleys of his past hits and the dude is so out of step with the world, he recently made the ridiculous claim that “the Internet is completely over”. All he needs to do now is pack a few pounds on that wispy, fey frame of his (we hear fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches can help), haul his carcass to Sin City and make it official. Also, does it not make sense that the Prince should reign where the King once did? Just sayin’.

4) Elton JohnSure, he’s more like the spiritual successor to Liberace than Elvis, but something tells us Vegas has a place reserved for the Rocket Man. And it’s not like he has any artistic integrity left to protect — he proved he was a total fucking sellout by playing at Rush Limbaugh’s wedding recently.

3) Every American Idol participant everAll of them. All the winners, all the runners-up, all the participants, everyone. They can even bring William Hung and that “Pants on the Ground” guy in for comic relief, and Paula Abdul can drop in to slur unintelligible compliments between sets. Make a whole stage show out of it! It makes perfect sense, since, as we mentioned, Vegas is the city of ersatz culture, so what better match than a show dedicated to the creation and promotion of ersatz talent? Plus it would protect the rest of us from accidental exposure by concentrating it in one place and clearly labeling it with a fifty-foot high neon billboard.

LCD Soundstyem, Raekwon Bring Heat To Pitchfork Music Festival …

July 20th, 2010

Day two of the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago included some early breakout performances, curious sets from veteran acts and punishing humidity throughout the day. However, most of Saturday afternoon (July 17) felt like a wait for headliners LCD Soundsystem, who offered a thrilling, career-spanning set after the sun had finally set on Union Park.

Pitchork Music Festival’s First Night

James Murphy said very little to the crowd in between songs, but the LCD frontman owned the stage as he shimmied under flashing purple lights and a giant disco ball. Backed by an incredibly meticulous five-piece band, including keyboardist Nancy Whang and guitarist David Scott Stone, Murphy led a raucous version of “Movement” before rattling off the hipster-baiting lyrics of “Losing My Edge.” The crowd treated Murphy like a rock god in turn, putting their lighters up for “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” and singing along as the song ended with a somber cover of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.”

Panda Bear offered a polarizing performance an hour earlier, with the Animal Collective member’s abstract songwriting and trippy visual show seeming out of place at the festival. Montreal indie rockers Wolf Parade proved more successful, with a set that showcased their new album “Expo 86″ as well as older gems, like the songs “I’ll Believe in Anything” and “This Heart’s On Fire.”

Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon took the stage 15 minutes late due to sound problems with his DJ’s equipment, and the first half of his set was plagued by more technical malfunctions, as many of his songs skipped or stopped cold. “Put one hand up if this shit is pissing you off!” the rapper said, as his crew tried to figure out what was wrong with the turntable. Once the sound problems were fixed, Raekwon brought out his secret weapon to recapture the crowd: four adolescent break dancers from Chi-Town Finest Breakers. The kids spun on their heads as Rae ran through “Protect Ya Neck” and “New Wu,” and one of the most disappointing performances of the day became one of the most memorable.

Spanish four-piece Delorean delivered 45 minutes of highly enjoyable dance-rock, including their gorgeous anthem “Seasun,” earlier in the afternoon. Philly rockers Free Energy kicked off the day with hook-heavy songs from debut album “Stuck on Nothing,” which was produced by none other than LCD Soundsystem’s Murphy.

The weekend-long fest’s second day –  which also included sets by punk upstarts Titus Andronicus, buzzworthy rapper Freddie Gibbs and alt-rock veterans Jon Spencer Blues Explosion — was marred by extremely high temperatures that had concertgoers seeking relief in the shade. Festival organizers slashed the price of water to $1 and continually passed out bottles from the front of the main stages.

Pitchfork Music Festival wraps up on Sunday with performances by Pavement, St. Vincent and Big Boi.

Rihanna Rockstar 101 music video official VEVO premiere, featuring Slash.

Rihanna’s music video for Rockstar 101 has been released. It was some undercover stealth mess, that was out a couple of hours ago, and almost passed me by. The same thing happened with the preview from last week. It was such a quite release that I almost missed it altogether. Rihanna needs to work on her damn marketing. How the heck is a video going to pass someone by, twice, when they’re looking out for the damn thing? Whatever. Here is the VEVO premiere; the date on this, oddly, is May 20, 2010 yet it only has 301 views. I guess the video was uploaded as private and only released a few hours ago. At least we get a VEVO video which is viewable in all countries (I’m assuming as I can actually see the damn thing). Check some stills and a non-VEVO upload of the video…

A non-VEVO version of the Rihanna Rockstar 101 music video, for yoooou.

Christmas Party Band, Live Entertainment More Exciting

July 20th, 2010

In order to have a successful Christmas party, a party could be planned to have a Christmas party band playing the evenings music as a substitute for the same old songs played on the radio or an incomplete collection of CD’s. An office Christmas party, a holiday house party or a children’s Christmas party would all be great parties with live music playing for those in attendance.

If someone is planning a Christmas party for their office, they could use some of their budget to hire a group of local musicians to play Christmas songs for the guests to revive a traditionally dull type of party.

There are several music related games that a live band could participate in along with the guests and would keep guests entertained for part of the party. Musical competitions between teams or groups might include musical chairs or Name That Tune and an office Christmas party of adult would enjoy this as much as children. Naturally a sing-along would be in order.

A holiday party at a family’s home would be extra special and have more guests singing and dancing, rather than looking for the door to leave if it included Christmas music played by a live band. Guest might be pleasantly surprised when they enter the host’s home and hear live Christmas music filling the air and other guests making requests for certain songs.

A nice addition to liven up a holiday party would be a live band accompanying visitors and guests with Christmas carols. There are hundreds of newer and traditional songs a band could perform as the guest mix with one another or dance if they so choose.

A person in charge of the entertainment for a Christmas office party or holiday gathering could review a band that plays Christmas music, along with their singers, at a local nightclub or other places they perform at around town. This is a good way for the person paying for the Christmas music to see and hear what they are paying for before the date of their event.

For a large children’s or teens party, a live band playing Christmas songs could act as the center piece for the entrance of Santa Claus and the gift exchange portion of the party. With this type of Christmas party, it would be nice if the band knew how to play some of the funnier Christmas songs such as Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer and then some of the older, traditional holiday songs like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer to name just a few of the many.

A hospital, schools with different ages and grades or a retirement home are all good places to have a Christmas party with a live band playing songs of today and yesterday. A party organizer would look good in the eyes of the attendees if they were to schedule a live band for entertainment.

If holding a Christmas party for a church group or religious organization, a Christmas party band that specializes in Christian or holy music might be ideal although the band could mix their playlist with traditional Christmas carols and songs to give a more well rounded performance.
