Four Star Music - Five Star Value!

Review Date: June 7, 2010

You say you can't get enough of strangely timeless, lilting, joyful, playful, sunny alternative pop? Then this is a must have non-purchase*! A truly irrepressible collection of new pop via inspiration via the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The sound is by turns big and intimate, dreamy and witty, groovy and groovier. Highlights include When They Fight, They Fight (The Generationals) and Light at the End of the Tunnel (Bloodsugars). Some may be divided on just how precious Fancy Beer is but the first time through is an absolute hoot. This is a stellar pop sampler.

* This compilation may be free but you are pretty certain to find at least a couple of bands worth collecting for a fee... but isn't that the point of these samplers?
Wide mix

Here we have a great mix of alternative/Indie and borderline folk music that in being free has allowed me to hear some new music that I might otherwise have not come across. Although not all songs do it for me a select few more than make up for it.

"Sooner or Later" reminds me of a softer more ethereal Nick Cave with its demi-orchestral sound, "When they Fight they Fight" gives a glimpse of a 50's pop ballad complete with trumpets and hand claps, and my favorite, "Light at the End of the Tunnel" gives a nod to The Beatles with an alternating tune that jumps and hitches then builds up smoothly to the chorus. Reminds me of "While my guitar Gently Weeps". Which can never be a bad thing in my book!

Overall a delightful listen particularly for a free album! Thanks Amazon.
